LUIS TARUC

Luis Taruc was a prominent Filipino revolutionary leader and a key figure in the Hukbalahap (Hukbong Bayan Laban sa Hapon), a guerrilla movement that fought against Japanese occupation during World War II. Born on April 21, 1913, in Pampanga, Taruc initially worked as a farmer before becoming involved in political activism. He became the leader of the Hukbalahap after its formation in 1942, which aimed to resist Japanese forces and fight for the rights of farmers and workers. After the war, the Huks shifted their focus to opposing the Philippine government, which they accused of corruption and neglect of the poor. Taruc’s leadership of the Huks symbolized the struggle of the rural poor for land reform and social justice. In 1954, after years of armed resistance, he was captured and later imprisoned but eventually released in 1963. Taruc’s legacy as a revolutionary leader remains influential in the history of Filipino politics and social movements.
