JUAN LUNA

Juan Luna (1857–1899) was a renowned Filipino painter and patriot whose art became a symbol of Filipino identity and resistance during Spanish colonial rule. Born in Badoc, Ilocos Norte, Luna studied painting in Manila and later in Spain, where he gained recognition for his exceptional talent. His masterpiece, “Spoliarium”, won a gold medal at the 1884 Exposición Nacional de Bellas Artes in Madrid and is celebrated for its powerful depiction of suffering and oppression, resonating deeply with the Filipino struggle for freedom. Luna was also an active member of the Propaganda Movement, alongside national heroes like José Rizal, advocating for reform and justice for Filipinos. Though his personal life was marred by tragedy, Luna’s artistic legacy endures, with his works continuing to inspire national pride and a love for Filipino culture.
