KATIPUNAN

The Katipunan, officially known as Kataastaasan, Kagalanggalangang Katipunan ng mga Anak ng Bayan (Highest and Most Honorable Society of the Children of the Nation), was a revolutionary organization established in the Philippines in 1892. Founded by Andrés Bonifacio, Teodoro Plata, Ladislao Diwa, and others, it aimed to achieve independence from Spanish colonial rule through armed revolution.

The Katipunan was a secret society that employed rituals, codes, and symbols to foster unity and loyalty among its members. Its primary goals were the liberation of the Philippines from Spanish oppression and the establishment of a free and democratic nation. The organization played a central role in the Philippine Revolution of 1896, inspiring Filipinos to fight for freedom and laying the foundation for the eventual declaration of Philippine independence in 1898. The Katipunan’s ideals of patriotism, equality, and justice continue to resonate in the nation’s history and identity.
